Wide-angle effects on galaxy ellipticity correlations

چکیده

We show an efficient way to compute wide-angle or all-sky statistics of galaxy intrinsic alignment in three-dimensional configuration space. For this purpose, we expand the two-point correlation function using a newly introduced spin-dependent tripolar spherical harmonic basis. Therefore, angular dependences on two line-of-sight (LOS) directions pointing each pair objects, which are degenerate with other conventional analysis under small-angle plane-parallel (PP) approximation, unambiguously decomposed. By means this, we, for first time, auto and cross correlations between ellipticities, number densities velocities galaxies, compare them PP-limit results. ellipticity-ellipticity density-ellipticity correlations, find more than $10\%$ deviation from results if opening angle LOS exceeds $30^\circ - 50^\circ$. It is also shown that even result strictly zero, non-vanishing obtained over various scales, arising purely curved-sky effects. Our indicate importance data not relying PP approximation order determine cosmological parameters precisely and/or new physics via ongoing forthcoming surveys.

Intrinsic/extrinsic Density-ellipticity Correlations and Galaxy-galaxy Lensing

We compute both extrinsic (lensing) and intrinsic contributions to the (galaxy-)density-ellipticity correlation function, the latter done using current analytic theories of tidal alignment. The gravitational lensing contribution has two components: one is analogous to galaxy-galaxy lensing and the other arises from magnification bias – that gravitational lensing induces a modulation of the gala...

Quantifying the Cosmic Web I: The large-scale halo ellipticity-ellipticity and ellipticity-direction correlations

The formation of dark matter halos tends to occur anisotropically along the filaments of the Cosmic Web, which induces both ellipticity-ellipticity (EE) correlations between the shapes of halos, as well as ellipticity-direction (ED) cross-correlations between halo shapes and the directions to neighboring halos. We analyze the halo catalogue and the semi-analytic galaxy catalogue of the recent M...

Measuring Shapes of Galaxy Images I: Ellipticity and Orientation

We suggest a set of morphological measures that we believe can help in quantifying the shapes of two-dimensional cosmological images such as galaxies, clusters, and superclusters of galaxies. The method employs non-parametric morphological descriptors known as the Minkowski functionals in combination with geometric moments widely used in the image analysis. For the purpose of visualization of t...

Do angular momentum induced ellipticity correlations contaminate weak lensing measurements?

Alignments in the angular momentum vectors of galaxies can induce large scale correlations in their projected orientations. Such alignments arise from the tidal torques exerted on neighboring proto-galaxies by the smoothly varying shear field. Weak gravitational lensing can also induce ellipticity correlations since the images of neighboring galaxies will be distorted coherently by the interven...

Angular correlations of galaxy distribution

We study the angular correlations of various galaxy catalogs (CfA1, SSRS1, Perseus-Pisces, APM Bright Galaxies and Zwicky). We find that the angular correlation exponent is γ a = 0.1 ± 0.1 rather than γ a = 0.7 as usually found by the standard correlation function ω(θ). We identify the problem in the artificial decay of ω(θ). Moreover we find that no characteristic angular scale is present in a...
